ASA Community Science Center is a small, urban, hands-on, minds-on, science center located in West Oakland, CA. We are a community of students, parents, teachers, business and community leaders and neighbors who share a vested interest in helping traditionally underrepresented youth prepare to move into the ever changing scientific/technological world of the 21st century.

After School Academic Support

ASA Community Science Center’s After School Academic Support Program is designed to provide tutorial support and teach the skills that are crucial for achieving academic success.  Each session is two hours long with trained and academically qualified tutors assisting students with homework and on-going projects.  Each week there will be “mini lessons” to teach academic skills so that students can eventually sustain and monitor their own academic success through useful tools, not only tutorial.

  •     Program with qualified tutors, especially in writing, math and science

  •     Small tutor to student ratio, along with one-on-one support

  •     Nurturing, culturally relevant and supportive environment

     Feedback! We provide parents and schools (with parent permission) with bi-monthly feedback of student’s growth and development in tutored subjects as well as academic success skills being utilized in the classroom 

After School Science Club

ASA Community Science Center offers exciting inquiry based science, hands-on, minds-on, experiences that promote science confidence and skills. The science club meets one day per week from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Each session is 60 minutes long.


Drop-In is also available for students who want some space to work on science projects or just tinker around. (with staff permission) 

Home School

We support home school families by assisting with dynamic, hands-on, inquiry based science lessons that are grade level appropriate and follow the CA Content Standards in Science.  We offer personalized lessons for students of home-school families in science from grades K – 12.  Families pay an hourly rate and small materials fee.
